Recycling

County recycling permits are available through request at the Canaan Town Hall. The permit allows you to take recyclables to stations located across the county, including the closest one on West Street in New Lebanon.

Composting

Food waste is a large contributor to the methane gas produced in landfills. If every American composted their food waste, methane emissions could be reduced by up to 14%, according to the EPA. Columbia County Solid Waste offers a composting center at the Greenport Transfer Station. You can learn more about it at this link to their page.

Hazardous Waste

Making sure hazardous waste stays within designated areas and out of the environment is crucial. Columbia County Solid Waste also runs a hazardous waste day twice a year. Their next date is October 10th, 2026 at the Greenport Transfer Station. For more information, follow this link.
